Festival of Trees Garrett County

One of the most anticipated events of the holiday season is the Festival of Trees Garrett County, which takes place the Friday and Saturday after Thanksgiving. This annual event is a true celebration of the season, featuring beautifully decorated trees, wreaths, and gingerbread houses. Local businesses, organizations, and individuals contribute to this magical display, with each tree and decoration available for purchase through a silent auction. The event also includes a holiday bazaar, craft vendors, and plenty of activities for kids, making it a perfect way to kick off the Christmas season.

Light Up Night in Downtown Oakland

A Great Small Town Christmas will kick off with a Light Up Night on Friday, November 29th at the Oakland B&O Museum. It starts with a walking holiday light parade, led by Santa Claus, beginning at the town parking lot. The parade makes its way to the B&O Museum for the official tree lighting.

Local Shopping for Unique Gifts

No holiday season is complete without finding the perfect gifts for your loved ones. Deep Creek Lake and the surrounding small towns are home to a variety of shops that offer one-of-a-kind gifts.

For Small Business Saturday (the Saturday after Thanksgiving), the shops in Oakland’s historic downtown offer great specials and promotions. There is also a Cocoa Crawl, and sleigh rides are available.  Shops where you can find great gifts include Englander’s Antique Mall and Cabin Fever Antiques or Flipside Sounds. The Garrett County Arts Council Gallery Shop has a wonderful variety of locally produced pottery, photography, jewelry, and more.

In the lake area, Schoolhouse Earth is a favorite for its eclectic mix of home décor, jewelry, and holiday decorations. The village, illuminated by the soft glow of candlelight, is home to a collection of historic log cabins where local artisans demonstrate their crafts. From blacksmithing to quilting, visitors can watch as these skilled craftsmen create unique, handmade items that make for one-of-a-kind holiday gifts.
